Jay Bates is a passionate entrepreneur and the founder of Jay's Custom Creations, a woodworking media business that he built over the course of a decade. After years of success, Jay and his family made a bold life change: they sold their
home and shop in town to purchase 100 acres of forested land, embarking on a new adventure to develop their forever
property in the woods. This transition led to the creation of BPo3 Homestead (Bates Party of 3), where Jay shifted his
focus to homesteading and documenting their journey.
A pivotal moment in this journey came when Jay invested in a Bad Boy 4035H Tractor, which quickly became an essential
part of their operations. He realized that a quality tractor is not just the MVP of their work but also a source of
personal joy—“tractor time” has become a therapeutic escape for him, and he refers to his tractor days as “good days.”
With his new homestead taking shape and his tractor helping to bring his vision to life, Jay continues to embrace this
journey and share his experiences with others.
Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
At the moment, we don't have a lawn. We have a forest! But we hope to have around 1-1/2 acres of grass.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
Bad Boy 4035H. Our homestead MVP.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
Gas. Refill is faster than recharge ;)
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
We cleared 2 acres of 20"+ diameter trees, and the BBL400 loader on our 4035 tractor did not disappoint in moving logs and root balls. The loader lifting capacity was a big selling point for me.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Seat time is your best teacher. Get out there and tear up some dirt. You have a tractor. You can always put the dirt back.

2018 by founding his own family landscaping company. Since then, his business has flourished, becoming a trusted name in
the industry on the island.

dealers and high shipping costs, Juan's determination has never wavered. In a bold move to ensure top-tier service and
quality, he invested in Bad Boy Mowers, Tractors, and Implements, a decision that has significantly transformed his
business. This strategic investment in durable, reliable equipment has allowed him to provide the best possible service

the success and growth of his business.
Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
Island grass is a whole different beast. Creating beautiful striped lines is tough, so we often have to settle for nice, clean cuts.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
My tractor is hands down my go-to tool. The versatility of being able to switch between multiple implements really helps get the job done. While my mowers are always hard at work, the tractor is essential for tackling the larger jobs.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
Given the tough terrain we have, gas and raw power are the way to go.
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
One of the toughest jobs I've tackled was cutting 10 acres of thick, 7-foot grass. With the help of two of my Rebel 60-inch mowers and my tractor equipped with the rotary implement, we were able to conquer that massive challenge, leaving the property owners not only satisfied but truly amazed.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
The best piece of advice I ever received came from my father. He told me to put my heart into everything I do and be passionate about the work I take on. While making money is important, our top priority is always delivering excellence and exceptional customer service to the people we serve.

Danny Hernandez never envisioned a future in lawn care. However, a life-changing injury led him to discover a new path. After facing one of the most difficult challenges of his life, Danny found himself in a wheelchair for six to eight
months, followed by another eight months using a walker. The road to recovery was long, but giving up was never an
option.
Coming from a background where providing for his family was always his top priority, hearing doctors say, “You won’t be
able to walk or work like you used to” was devastating. It was at his lowest point that Danny found lawn care—or
perhaps, lawn care found him. What started as a way to pass the time soon became a source of purpose, motivation, and,
ultimately, a second chance at life.
Danny credits this path as a gift from God and is deeply grateful for it, as it played a pivotal role in saving his
life. Lawn care has opened countless doors and provided opportunities that continue to shape his future. He remains
passionate about reminding others: Never give up on yourself. Always push forward, no matter how challenging the journey
may be.
Through every obstacle and setback, Danny has learned that struggles don’t define us; it’s how we rise above them that
truly matters. Danny refuses to accept limitations. His message is clear: With perseverance and determination, anything
is possible.
Danny is honored to represent a brand that reflects the same strength and perseverance that have carried him throughout
his journey. Built tough. Never give up. With attitude—it’s personal.
Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
Definitely stripes! There's nothing like the bold, professional look of perfectly laid stripes on a fresh-cut lawn. It adds a level of precision and pride to every job, turning a simple mow into a statement. Stripes showcase skill, attention to detail, and a passion for the craft—something I take seriously every time I fire up my mower.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
One piece of equipment I can't live without is my edger. It's always in my truck because I believe the details make all the difference. Seeing a property transform from start to finish is incredibly satisfying, but the final touch of clean, crisp edges takes the look to a whole new level. It adds precision and professionalism to every job, ensuring the property doesn't just look maintained—it looks exceptional.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
At our company, we believe in balancing power and
sustainability. While gas-powered equipment has long been the standard
for its strength and reliability, we recognize the importance of eco-friendly
solutions. That's why, at the end of last
season, we made the decision to convert all of our handheld equipment to battery
power. This transition allows us to
provide cleaner air while still delivering top-quality results.
We currently offer both gas and electric options to meet the needs of our clients,
but our long-term goal is to fully
transition to electric—including our mowers. One of the biggest advantages of
electric equipment is the cleaner
experience—no lingering smell of gas or oil at the end of the day. Plus, the quieter
operation allows us to start our
routes earlier without disturbing the neighborhood.
We're committed to efficiency, performance, and environmental responsibility,
ensuring that our services not only meet
the highest standards but also contribute to a cleaner, quieter future.

One of the toughest yet most rewarding jobs I've
taken on was made possible thanks to Bad Boy Mowers and my local
dealer, Merritt Hardware in Bridgeport, Connecticut. While demoing a Bad Boy SD
Revolt, I came across a Bridgeport
firefighter who shared that their firehouse mower had broken down. That conversation
sparked an idea—I had the equipment
and the opportunity to give back to the community I grew up in, so I decided to
donate my time and mow the entire
firehouse property.
With the power, precision, and attitude of the Bad Boy SD Revolt, I was able to get
the job done efficiently, and the
firefighters were so impressed that they even mentioned Bad Boy would be their top
choice when purchasing a new mower.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Bad Boy Mowers and Merritt Hardware for
making this possible. Without their
support, I wouldn't have been able to give back in such a meaningful way. This
experience reinforced my belief in
community, hard work, and the importance of paying it forward.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Start with what you have and just get started.
Don't focus on what others have—focus on your own journey. Success isn't about
having the best equipment right away; it's about staying consistent, working hard,
and pushing through even when
your mind tells you to stop.
Nothing worth having comes easy, but if you stay committed, believe in yourself, and
keep moving forward, you can
achieve anything you set your mind to. Hard work and perseverance will always take
you further than any piece of
equipment ever could.

The toughest would have to be dragging our field to mulch up all the manure. We are very new to the horse world and found out quick that the pasture needs to be maintained and cleaned. At the moment, didn't have anything that would fit through the gate but not get stuck, insert the Bad boy Maverick here! With the aggressive tread and pulling power I was able to clean the pasture and get it back healthy.

Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
We take pride in delivering a crisp, clean finish to every lawn we maintain. We aim for a bold stripe look, creating sharp, professional mowing patterns that enhance the overall appearance of the property. This attention to detail not only makes the lawn look well-manicured but also adds to its curb appeal, ensuring a polished and eye-catching result every time.

We couldn’t live without our Bad Boy Revolt mower! It’s a game-changer when it comes to tackling all types of lawns, from small residential yards to large commercial properties. Plus, it leaves behind crisp, bold lines that give each property a clean, professional look. When it comes to reliability and results, the Bad Boy Revolt delivers every time!
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
We prefer gas-powered equipment because it provides consistent power and reliability throughout the workday. Unlike electric equipment, which relies on batteries that can run out mid-job, gas-powered tools allow us to work efficiently without interruptions. Additionally, gas equipment typically delivers more power and durability, making it better suited for handling tough lawn and landscape tasks. By using gas-powered machines, we ensure that we can provide uninterrupted, high-quality service to our clients.
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
We’ll never forget the time our Bad Boy Revolt mower truly proved its worth. A client called us in a panic—her lawn had grown nearly two feet tall because her husband had been dealing with health issues and couldn’t mow for an extended period. She was overwhelmed and unsure how to get it back under control. Thankfully, the Bad Boy Revolt was up for the challenge. It handled the overgrown grass like it was nothing. The transformation was incredible, and the client was beyond grateful. Moments like these remind us why having the right equipment makes all the difference!
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
The best equipment advice we have is to keep blades sharp and decks clean. Sharp blades ensure precise, professional cuts, while a clean deck prevents grass buildup and cross-contamination between different lawns. This simple maintenance routine keeps our equipment performing at its best and ensures every lawn gets a flawless finish.

Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
I absolutely love mowing. I currently have a cub cadet lawn tractor with a 46 inch cutting deck and I'd love to one day own a Bad Boy zero turn. I mow about 2 acres of grass and take pride (a little bit of ocd lol) making nice straight stripes when I mow.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
Hands down it has to be the 4035CH. My wife and I purchased our 20 acre property in Pennsylvania early 2021 and we just bought the tractor spring of 2024. And boy do I wish we purchased the tractor sooner. So far it's been a workhorse helping clean up the property from the previous owner as well as being priceless for the general maintenance around the property.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
To be completely honest, I welcome both. I love the sound, maintenance, and history of gas powered but I'm very interested to see how electric innovations become a huge factor in the homeowner, homesteading, and property maintenance lifestyles.
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
My biggest job with the 4035CH thus far has been creating the foundation for my new 24x55 metal building. Using the backhoe I was able to all the digging necessary which on one side needed to be about 3.5 feet deep due to the slope of the ground and using the front end loader I was able to move the dirt where needed. This machine handles our rocky soil so well and has shown to already save us thousands of dollars being able to tackle such projects ourselves.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Be sure to thoroughly educate yourself on how to properly operate and maintain the machine and it'll be an invaluable and trustworthy piece of equipment.

Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
I always go for stripes as I take pride in my work but they make the lawn stand out from the competition and catch the attention of my clients' neighbors. This has even helped me gain more clients, as many love the clean, professional look.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
The Bad Boy Revolt 36” is my go-to mower, and I plan to add a 54” but more than likely a 61” Revolt as I take on more 1-acre lots, along with the new Bad Boy blower. The Revolt 36” is built like a tank and has never let me down, even in thick, 1-foot grass. When I was originally searching for a 32”-36” unit, I was leaning toward Scag, but the moment I saw the Revolt 36” in person, I knew it was the one. For its size, it outperforms the competition with its FX691V engine, larger front caster wheels, soft platform, and beefy front caster arms that gives it a bulldog-like stance.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
Gas all the way. It’s much simpler and more efficient to maintain a 2-stroke weed eater since replacing components is easy if something goes wrong. With electric models, you either have to buy an extra lithium battery, wait for it to charge, or, worst-case scenario, replace the entire unit—especially since many aren’t serviceable from what I’ve seen. These are key things to consider how equipment downtime can affect your efficiency in the lawn industry.
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
I mowed a 2-acre property with 1-foot-high grass using my Revolt 36”. It took a while, but the mower never hesitated, and I never felt like it would break down. I knew I’d need at least two passes on this property, but I wanted to really test the limits of my Revolt. The only downside is not having a wider model—if I did, it would’ve been a cakewalk.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
“Pay the price or buy it twice!"
Invest your hard earned money in the right tools for the job. If you go the cheap
route and buy a residential mower for
heavy, continuous work, you'll eventually have to replace it or having to fork up
the extra funds to upgrade to a
commercial model anyway.

Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
I always lay stripes down when I can!
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
The Rogue has been my top mower for years, but I look forward doing some land management on the outfitting side of things with the Tractor and Bandit UTV.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
Both are great, but when you’re working daylight to dark, you have to go with gas.
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
The constant battle of 6-7 days a week of 8-12 hour mowing days is probably the toughest. In this line of work I can’t afford down time so operable equipment is a must!
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Buy the right equipment from the beginning. This is something I was told early on, but I had to learn the hard way as well.

Removing a stump that a customer thought was way too big, and not gonna lie, I sort of thought the same! But with a chain and some slow, steady movement, we got it out when the customer's bigger tractor couldn't budge it!
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Practice practice practice!!!

While installing trees at a larger landscape install, our tractor made it very easy to haul the larger trees through the property without risking the integrity of the root system, we were able to load the burlap ball into the bucket and smoothly transition it into the pre-dug holes.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Keep your ego out of business, be willing to ask questions, never be afraid to admit your mistakes and always focus on the clients not the money.

Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
I'm a stripe guy for sure. I love the natural stripes that my Magnum mower makes. I don't have a fancy roller, but it looks great nonetheless.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
My Bad Boy Magnum is so crucial to my homestead. From clearing brush to mowing pastures to helping my transport material and supplies around the homestead, I don’t know what I’d do without it.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
I’m a gas guy, but I’m not totally against electric. I don’t like being limited with cords, so gas has always been a preference of mine!

When I first purchased the property that my homestead is on, it was over grown and unkept. With my Magnum Bad Boy I was able to clear out 3 1/2 acres and transform it into nice pasture land that I use for deer hunting. My Magnum mower handled the job like a champ!
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
The best advice I ever received for owning equipment is to always maintain your equipment BEFORE you think you need to! A maintained piece of equipment is a working piece of equipment!

Bad Boy Q & A
When mowing, do you go for the classic clean-cut look or bold, professional stripes?
No stripes, I have 6.6 acres of rough pasture land. I keep it as natural as I can for all my wildlife critters I feed/photograph.
Whether it's your Bad Boy, a favorite attachment, or a must-have tool, what's always in your arsenal?
I love my Maverick HD! It rides amazin and the cut is great! I love that I can add accessories to it and the integrity/honor held by the reps at Bad Boy that stand behind their product. You don't find that in business much anymore.
Are you all about that raw gas-powered muscle, or do you like the clean efficiency of electric?
Depends on the job. I do gas for the most part.
Share a time when your Bad Boy equipment helped you conquer a serious challenge in the field, on the farm, or at work.
I’ve got 6.6 acres of rough pasture, so I joined the Bad Boy family with an eagerness from all the great reviews I had heard. Since I have bought my Maverick HD, this ole 6.6 acres has become a dream/pleasure to get out and mow.
Whether from a seasoned pro or learned from experience, what's your go-to tip for getting the job done right?
Preventative maintenance always! Treat your tools like you treat your children.
